The CDC says the U.S. death rate fell 3.8% in 2024 to its lowest level since 2020. COVID-19 dropped out of the top 10 causes of death for the first time since the pandemic began. Heart disease and cancer still led—and both saw more deaths than in 2023. Suicide moved into 10th place. The trend is positive, but gaps by age, sex, and race persist.
